Either I’m getting bigger…

There are certain inalienable truths about getting older.

Firstly, you start uttering phrases your parents did that once drove you mad. Next, it’s muttering under your breath about “kids these days.” Finally, it’s looking back fondly on the way things used to be, and wondering why they had to change.

I find myself doing the third thing lately more and more, and in a place I never expected.

It seems every time I go to the grocery store, I shake my head as I pick up and item and it doesn’t quite fill the palm of my hand the way it used to.

This week, it was these two items that really pushed me over the edge:

I was picking up these items to use together, ironically. Two things went through my mind:

Am I getting bigger, or is that carton of cream smaller than it used to be?

Maybe 218ml of pesto just isn’t enough for me anymore?

Now, I’ll be honest, I don’t have proof, but I know I’m definitely right about the cream carton.

I only buy cartons of cream to cook or bake with. I don’t use it for any other purpose. It used to be that I could buy a small container of cream, like the one pictured above, when a recipe called for a cup of cream because it was exactly a cup: 250 ml. Perfect.

Now when a recipe calls for a cup of cream, I have to move up a size because that smaller container there? It’s no longer a cup — it’s 13 ml less.

So I have to pay an extra dollar for 13 ml, while I likely end up throwing out the extra 223 ml I don’t need.

You’ll have to take my word on this though. I don’t have a photo to prove I’m right, but I don’t even want to think about what my fridge would smell like with a container of cream that old in it.

The pesto was just a feeling I had when I picked it up. It used to fill my palm more. When I grabbed the jar off the shelf, it felt like something was missing.

Funny how while the size of these products has changed, the price hasn’t. If anything, I’d wager while the size of the product has decreased, the price has gone up. I’m not the only one who’s noticed. Marketplace did a story on this last season (funnily enough, when I went looking for that episode, I also found one from 2011, so I guess it’s really nothing new).

I can live with the smaller jar of pesto, I never ate it all anyways, but I’m still pretty peeved about the cream. What favourite product of yours has decreased in size?
